What is a Doula?
"A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible." [Source: DONA]
A Birth Doula provides guidance on what you can expect during birth, and information and guidance in the weeks before birth. During labor your doula will give you support and physical comfort and assist with communicating with your partner and medical staff. She will also help with initial care of your baby immediately after birth.
A post-partum Doula provides newborn care, help with family adjustment, meal preparation, and light household chores. She helps you adjust to physical and emotional recovery from the birth and helps you to understand life with your new baby.
An ante-partum Doula provides support to mothers who are prescribed bed-rest in the weeks before labor.
Doulas are not medical professionals (such as a registered nurse or doctor is). They don't deliver babies or provide medical care.
